Haz bajado un archivo comprimido en .rar y encontrastes que el “Archive Manager”, no lo pude abrir? Esto se debe a que el soporte de RAR no puede ser incluido por defecto en Ubuntu por causa de ser un software propietario. Pero si hay una opción.
Instala la aplicación “unrar” y no tendrás mas problemas, solo abre el Terminal (Shell) dale un update a los repositorios y escribe este comando.
sudo apt-get install unrar
Luego de esto busca el archivo comprimido y le das “Extract Here” y listo!
